Albemarle moves forward with redo of homestay rules

Albemarle County could be putting more restrictive regulations on how short-term residential rentals, such as Airbnb, can operate in the county.

On Monday, the county Board of Supervisors held its second work session on potential changes to the county’s current zoning ordinance regarding transient lodging, also known as short-term lodging or homestays.

The majority of the board did not support allowing whole-house rentals — where homeowners are not present — in residential zoning districts or small-lot subdivisions in the rural area zoning districts. Most of the board members supported whole-house rentals on larger lots in the rural area zoning districts, with some limitations.
