Local cyber firm aims to disrupt the bots stoking social media warfare

Charlottesville entrepreneurs Jim Zuffoletti and Otavio Freire have seen the future of social media and, in a word, it’s scary.

With foreign-born bots infiltrating your newsfeed, hackers undercutting companies with fictitious news about their products and stock prices, and imposters befriending you and your children online, it’s harder than ever to trust the voices around you.

“Hacking people’s computers was the last generation of cyber warfare; hacking people’s minds is the new generation,” Freire, the president and chief technology officer of cybersecurity company Social SafeGuard, said. “They want to manipulate how you think.”
