Girls Day grows in its third year at UVa

Three years ago, Caitlin Murtaugh, a construction project coordinator at the University of Virginia, started Girls Day to encourage girls to pursue construction trades.

The idea was born after she received a certification in plumbing through the UVa Facilities Management Apprenticeship Program and realized how few women were working in the field.

Seeking to create a support network and effect change, she started the event, which this year gave more than 80 girls the chance to learn more about facilities management, get a behind-the-scenes look at worksites and talk with women about careers in typically male-dominated fields.
