In brief discussion, City Council discusses direct election of mayor

The Charlottesville City Council teased the idea for just a few minutes Monday night, but it might have been the first step toward letting the public, rather than themselves, elect the mayor of the city.

No more than two weeks after the council announced it will not seek to renew City Manager Maurice Jones’ contract, which ends in December, three councilors said they are willing to consider amending the city charter to move toward what’s known as a strong mayor form of government.

“I think it’s a very noble thing for us to look at ... in terms of changing or revising the current structure of our government,” Councilor Wes Bellamy said.
