Planned Western Albemarle cell tower stalled

A proposed cell tower on the grounds of Western Albemarle High School has been delayed after a critical report from Albemarle County staff.

The cell tower, first proposed last year, would stand behind the home bleachers of the football field and reach the homes of 400 students who do not have access to broadband, officials said. County staff said several factors of the proposed 145-foot pole, which would be built by Milestone Communications, were objectionable.

Staff said the location, height and design of the pole, as well as the method of antenna attachment, would be too visible to surrounding residential buildings; the facility was not adequately screened; the facility had proposed five arrays of antennas instead of the county-regulated maximum of three; and the tower didn’t fit within the county’s Comprehensive Plan.
