Council urged to act on need for affordable housing

A scheduled presentation of a report on affordable housing in Charlottesville was deferred Monday, but several members of the public addressed the evergreen topic and asked that the City Council look to adopt a new strategic plan to develop truly affordable housing.

About two years ago, the council agreed to double the annual allocation for the city’s housing fund and the redevelopment of public housing, but community members are now demanding that the city create a formal strategy that the public can evaluate and weigh in on before it is adopted.

According to the proposed five-year capital budget plan for the city, there will be nearly $20 million for the development of affordable housing — $2.5 million of it specifically for redevelopment.
