Downtown business woes look to surpass just short-term issues

The Aug. 12 Unite the Right rally, a pilot program to install parking meters downtown and competition from shopping centers in Albemarle County all have been cited as reasons for the Charlottesville’s recent economic misfortunes, but few have acknowledged that some residents from Albemarle and surrounding counties might be avoiding the city.

“[The Shops at] Stonefield and 5th St. Station are filtering our county clients,” Peter Castiglione, co-owner of Maya restaurant, said in a recent email city officials and other local business owners. “Why drive into the city, fight for parking and pay a 25 percent higher tax rate? This is even worse now that so many are boycotting the city to make a point about their unrest with our current politic.”
