Focused Ultrasound Foundation to include animal research

The Charlottesville-based Focused Ultrasound Foundation is expanding its research to include the treatment of animals.

The foundation hopes focused ultrasound, which uses high-intensity sound energy to destroy damaged or diseased tissue, will allow researchers to find new therapies for pets, as well as speed up development of the technology for humans.

“Pets live in the same environments we do, and develop many of the same diseases,” said Kelsie Timbie, the foundation’s veterinary program director. “We’ve been doing focused ultrasound research for years, trying to get it into human clinical practice, and meanwhile veterinarians have been searching for this type of treatment.”
