Give the young generation credit for tackling a tough problem and emerging with worthy responses.
Some 200 Albemarle County students were willing to delve into the controversy over monuments. At the end of their project, they presented several ideas for rectifying a local imbalance in representations of African-American history. Their ideas are on par with many of the proposals offered by adults on this topic.
The “Let ’Em Shine” project started with a $20,000 grant to the county schools last year for from the LRNG Innovators Challenge, funded by John Legend’s Show Me Campaign, the National Writing Project and the MacArthur Foundation.
