Restrictive zoning makes tight Charlottesville housing supply even tighter

Buying a house in the Charlottesville area these days is a bit like trying to adopt a newborn baby.

The opportunities are scarce, the competition is stiff and, like adoptive parents, the would-be buyers sometimes resort to writing letters pleading their merits.

Housing sales and inventory data released by the Charlottesville Area Association of Realtors on Tuesday spelled out the numbers behind a situation so grim that some officials have called it a “housing crisis” and likened it to a “chronic disease.”
