Albemarle supervisors approve funding for short-term uses of Yancey building

The Albemarle County Board of Supervisors on Wednesday approved funding for near-term community uses of the former Yancey Elementary School building in Esmont.

As a community committee and the county work on long-term plans, community access to the internet, space for a monthly meeting for the Jefferson Area Board for Aging and police access to the building as a workspace will be among approved uses.

Work has been underway to fully reopen the building to area residents after the School Board voted in May to close the school. Former Yancey students have been reassigned to Scottsville and Red Hill elementary schools.
