Six food delivery apps operated in Charlottesville until Sept. 14, six weeks after a strategic partnership between Grubhub and Groupon led to Grubhub acquiring 27 market areas from Groupon’s OrderUp. The move leaves Grubhub Inc. with only two true competitors in the area — one major and one local — and positions them as the dominant mobile food-ordering company in the region.
The acquisition also led to the layoff of more than 70 employees nationwide, including one who had helped Charlottesville become one of the most profitable OrderUp markets in the country.
