Opinion/Editorial: City in more danger than two years ago

“Can Ferguson happen here?”
 
That was the title of a forum held in Charlottesville two years ago — after “Ferguson” had become synonymous with racial strife and police shootings, the way “Charlottesville” has now become shorthand for neo-Nazi violence visited on progressive communities.
 
There, and in other discussions both formal and informal, community consensus seemed to be that it couldhappen here — but matters had not yet reached an ignition point; we still had time to address racial issues and deflect violence.
