Redevelopment of Kmart site to include partial demolition

As construction of a hotel between the Ridge Street and Fifeville neighborhoods nears completion, Charlottesville is preparing for the transformation of a now-vacant 120,000-square-foot building off U.S. 29 and Hydraulic Road.
With the Fairfield Inn at the William Taylor Plaza development expected to open early next year, the final site plan reviews for the next phase of the planned unit development, a 27-unit apartment complex, are now underway.
And after announcing its intention to redevelop the now-closed Kmart and Gold’s Gym, Riverbend Development will begin the process to demolish parts of the building and spruce up its appearance. The building will be tailored down to 77,000 square feet and will accommodate six to eight new retailers.
