Democratic council hopefuls prepare for showdown in contentious climate

Voters in Charlottesville Tuesday will decide who will be the two Democratic candidates for City Council in the Nov. 8 general election.

After two terms in office, Councilor Kristin Szakos is not running for reelection, leaving Bob Fenwick the lone incumbent. Fenwick is facing Amy Laufer and Heather Hill in the race for the Democratic nomination.

And if a more than decade-long trend continues, the two Democratic nominees will win in November.

The contemporary political climate, however, could make the race more competitive than it has been in recent election cycles.
