Kmart to close in July amid planning for Hydraulic-29 area

Another large retail store along the U.S. 29 corridor has announced plans for a liquidation sale, setting the stage for the potential development of a high-class retail center near the intersection of the highway and Hydraulic Road.
In an email Monday afternoon, Sears Holdings corporate spokesman Howard Riefs confirmed that the company has made the “difficult, but necessary decision” to close the Charlottesville Kmart at the end of July.
A leasing broker for developers Coran Capshaw and Hunter Craig said Monday that there are plans to bring aboard national tenants for a new Class A retail center that will be on par with the Stonefield and Barracks Road shopping centers.
