Council hopeful leads protest over Landmark tax breaks

Standing in the rain at a protest in the center of the Downtown Mall on Monday, independent City Council candidate Paul Long said he would use his council position to see the Landmark Hotel demolished if the project developer fails to resume construction by the end of the year.
Long made the comments at a sparsely attended rally he organized to protest the council’s recent decision to give the developer of the hotel an annual tax rebate in return for him expediting construction of the planned luxury hotel.
According to the terms of the incentive plan, which includes a performance agreement, developer John Dewberry could receive more than $1 million in tax breaks over a 10-year period if the hotel opens by July 1, 2020.
