LWV CVA Sunday Seminar features author of expose on coal industry
On September 17 at 2:00 P.M. author Vivian Thomson will speak at City Space in the Charlottesville Downtown Mall at the next League of Women Voters' Sunday Seminar.
Michael Mann, distinguished professor of atmospheric science at Penn State, says Thomson "kicks ash and names names in her no-holds-barred expose on the coal industry in its efforts to seize control of the environmental policy apparatus." A former Professor of Environmental Policy at the University of Virginia and currently Director of the BA Program in Environmental Thought and Practice there, her book, Climate of Capitulation: An Insider's Account of State Power in a Coal Nation, identifies a deeply rooted favoritism toward coal and electric policies. Professor Thomson links Virginia's submission to coal and electric companies with campaign finance patterns, a state legislature that depends on outsiders for information and bill drafting, and a political climate that trends toward inertia. After her presentation the author will field questions and sign copies of her book. LWV CVA Sunday Seminars are free and open to the public.
